Aak : Calotrpis procera (Flowers) - An important medicinal plant helps in treating Post Covid - 19 and other patients, suffering from respiratory diseases..

Calotropis procera belongs to the family Asclepiadaceae, shrubs, grown mainly in wastelands of all over India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malay Islands, and South China. The vernacular name of the plant may vary from country to country and in many states. In English, it is called Madder, Aak, Madder; Hindi- Madar, Aak; Tamil,  Vellerukku or Erukku; and Urdu - Gul-e-Madar.

Two varieties of the plant are mostly known i.e. Calotropis procera (white flowered) and Calotropis gigantea (red or purple-flowered). In Indigenous System of medicines. the dried and fresh roots, root bark, leaves, inspissated juice and flower parts of the plant has many therapeutic actions such as SARAM for kushtam, visham, kandu, vranam, pachanam, gulmama, arsas, kapodaram, etc., FLOWER for aphrodisiac, lagu, dipnam, pachanam, in aruchi, swasam, kasam, etc.

Calotrpis procera now very much attracting medicinal plant growers because of their medicinal properties for Asthma patients and other patients who are suffering from acute or chronic lungs and respiratory tract diseases. In the past two years, in India, the plant becomes most popular and high in demand because of dried flowers being used in the preparation of Siddha Shashtric medicine named " Swasakudori Mathirai OR Swasakudori tablets" This tablet is very useful to treating post-Covid - 19 patient, Ashthematc patients and other people suffering from acute or chronic respiratory ailments.

In India mostly flowers may be harvested from July to the last week of September when it blooming well. The collection of roots and root bark in these months also gives a good yield of the principal constituents.
